Human Rights by the Numbers |
By Larry Kilman Friday, 13 January 2017 Human Rights Watch has released its 2017 World Report that shows how many journalists were arrested, NGOs shut down, and families displaced. The numbers are sobering: - 76 per cent of hospitals in Venezuela have a severe shortage of basic medicines; - 467,800 people, mainly Muslim, have sought refuge in the Central African Republic from fighting in neighboring countries; - 75 journalists have fled into exile from Ethiopia; - 150 NGOs have been designated as “foreign agents” by Russia’s Ministry of Justice (more on Russia’s crackdown on NGOs can be found here. The report has been summarized in a short video that is worth watching (it’s only a minute and a half). Photo: courtesy of Human Rights Watch
